Sniper Rifles are the masters of long-range combat on Auraxis. With slow rates-of-fire, an over-reliance on headshots, and wide minimum hip cones-of-fire, sniper rifles are almost entirely kept out of the close-quarters market, however their incredible damage-per-shot even at ranges exceeding hundreds of meters gives users the ability to reliably eliminate enemies at any range.

Unlike other infantry small arms, Sniper Rifles use separate Sniper Rifles resistance type. Reducing potency of body and leg shots for the Nanoweave Armor wearing targets.

Sniper rifles are broadly divided into two overarching categories; semi-automatic and bolt-action, and then further divided into close-range and longer-ranged classes within those divisions.

  • Closer-ranged options will often lack the integrated scopes and ranged damage potential of their counterparts, but are far more mobile with faster fire rates/chamber times and their ability to instead mount lower magnification optics mean they can be drawn to aiming faster.
  • The balanced bolt-action options and scoped semi-automatic rifles provide a mix between medium and long range potency. Though their damage at range and velocities are often lower, they still feature faster firing rates and often reload relatively quickly.

Then, exclusively to bolt-action rifles, the longer ranged rifles are divided into high-capacity and high-damage categories.

  • The higher-capacity rifles feature a higher bullet velocity and larger magazine than their balanced counterparts, while still reloading faster than their higher-damaging brethren.
  • The high-damage bolt action rifles sacrifice the magazine size, chamber time, and reload speed their siblings use in exchange for raw damage at range, with scarcely a single weapon type able to even touch their long-ranged power.

Each faction also has access to a rifle exclusive to their faction, that plays off their faction traits; Icon TR shorter ranged and a high rate-of-fire, Icon NC high damage and incredible velocity, or Icon VS balanced and adaptable with a heat-based ammo pool.

Icon VS Bolt-action sniper rifles available to the Vanu Sovereignty do not inherit the faction's 'no bullet drop' trait. This does, however, mean their muzzle velocities are equal to their cross-faction counterparts. Semi-automatic sniper rifles still enjoy access to this trait.

Trivia[]

  • The Vanu Sovereignty's bolt-action sniper rifles are also not technically bolt-action, since their chambering action is not done via pulling a bolt, but rather by pushing the "cooled" battery back into the chamber.
  • The Vanu Sovereignty's sniper rifles all do have bullet drop with the exception of these three: the Phantom, the VA39 Spectre and the PhaseShift VX-S.
  • Sniper rifles that do have bullet drop are, almost as a rule, zeroed at 150 meters when not equipped with a Suppressor. This includes weapons in the "short range" subset of sniper rifles when equipped with low magnification optics or iron sights.
    • The functional implication of this is that any range below 150 meters is "point blank" for a head-sized target; the arc of the projectile will not go higher than the top of the target's head before 75 meters if the point of aim is completely centered on their head. It will not dip below the bottom of the target's head for several meters after the 150 meter mark.

    • Anti-infantry sniper rifles now use a separate Sniper Rifles resistance (type 20).
    • Being struck by a sniper rifle now has more prominent audio.
    • Dev Note: The damage values for this new resistance are equivalent to small arms. This change will allow us to do is modify the bodyshot damage output from Nanoweave, as mentioned above.
    • Most Shotguns, Sniper Rifles, and Scout Rifles now use Comfort Grips, instead of Forward Grips.
    • Dev Note: Traditional Forward Grips offered no functional benefits to slow firing semi-auto weapons, so swapping them for Comfort Grips (which reduce the equip and unequip time of a weapon,) can be interpreted as a buff in almost all cases.
