The Skyguard is a primary weapon available to the Lightning. It is unlocked through purchase with Certification Points or Daybreak Cash.
The Skyguard is a dedicated anti-air cannon, granting the Lightning a high elevation cannon that fires proximity-fused 40mm flak rounds dealing moderately high damage against aircraft, lethal versus empire specific fighters and able to deal considerable damage to Valkyries and Liberators, though is perhaps comparatively less lethal against the Galaxy.
In exchange for its anti-air specialization, the weapon outputs relatively poor damage to targets besides aircraft, has a wide cone-of-fire, and has limited gun depression. While the large cone-of-fire is partially negated by the flak round's generous proximity fuse, it nonetheless limits the platform's effective range, and is a serious handicap against smaller targets, such as infantry, although rounds that do strike less well-armored targets still deal noticeable damage.
The Skyguard's proximity fused rounds trigger within 5 meters of hostile aircraft. The rounds will not detonate if they have not traveled at least 10 meters after being fired.
