Decoy Flares are a defense module for all air vehicles that cancels lock-ons for a small period of time. After use, a cool-down prevents immediate re-use of the flares. The module both disrupts the lock-ons of missiles currently aimed at the vehicle, and prevents enemies from acquiring further lock-ons. The time taken for the flares to become available again are affected by the level of the certification.
When using flares, one should be aware of the different states of the lock-on indicator:
- Flashing - Enemy is attempting to lock on.
- Solid, no beeping - Enemy has acquired a lock, but has not fired yet.
- Solid, beeping - Enemy has locked on and fired a missile.
When the lock-on indicator starts flashing, it is advisable to immediately retreat for cover. Do not activate flares yet, since no missile has been fired yet. Cover could be geographical features, such as the large mountains on Amerish, or behind large facilities or towers. If no obvious cover is available in immediate range, it is best to fly as low as possible without crashing. If a lock is acquired (where the lock-on indicator turns solid and a beeping noise is heard), only then should flares be activated.
